Beyond Victim Mentality
True freedom requires that we give up victim mentality altogether. If there is no victim, then there is no perpetrator—only accountability. Many will reject this notion because the human mind wants to be right, to justify its anger, indignation and victim stance in the face of unfair circumstances. Of course, this is useful for a time, as we come to terms with whatever devastation has come into our lives, but it doesn’t bring resolution. From a human perspective, this all makes sense and we can get a lot of support for our anger, indignation and the unfairness that life has handed us. However, anyone who has experienced a tragedy or trauma in their life knows, this attitude does not bring peace. The reason for this is that we are giving our power away to external circumstances or people, even as we curse them or rebel against them.
Mastery requires giving up victim mentality totally and understanding that earth is a school. A school we have chosen to enroll in and in which we learn certain challenging lessons. Class is in session everyday until each lesson is mastered. The situations we encounter are for our own benefit and growth, and we are not victims, but creators. Once we embrace this role as creator of our own reality, the healing accelerates and the blame dissipates. We become empowered, no longer defined by our past, but rather living in the present, where we are in charge of our every thought, feeling and action in our life. Not an easy task, but one worth working on, not only for the betterment of ourselves, but also for uplifting others and the planet. How empowering and inspiring would it be to leave a legacy of ownership and accountability to our children and future generations, rather than one of victim hood?
It strikes me as truly amazing how one sweet, innocuous pledge to ourselves to do better, to be grateful, to speak authentically and to be kind, can lead to an inner and ultimately outer revolution. Won’t you join me?
